SION, Switzerland – Primoz Roglic of Slovenia tightened his grip on the Tour de Romandie, extending his total lead by inserting second within the hardest mountain stage gained by Jakob Fuglsang on Saturday.

After three Class 1 climbs, Denmark’s Fuglsang broke from the leaders’ group on the ultimate descent of a 149-kilometer (92-mile) trek round Sion.

Fuglsang completed 48 seconds forward of Roglic, who edged his closest rival Egan Bernal of Colombia on the end to earn two bonus seconds. Bernal couldn’t shake off Roglic regardless of fixed assaults.

Roglic, driving for LottoNL-Jumbo, leads Bernal by eight seconds total forward of Sunday’s ultimate stage of the six-day race.

Third-placed Richie Porte of Australia trails Roglic by 35 seconds after ending fifth within the stage.

Sunday’s stage is a 182-kilometer journey into Geneva favoring sprinters.
