According to Marcus Smart, the Celtics might have beaten the Warriors in the 2018 NBA Finals

Marcus Smart may have unintentionally provided some bulletin-board fodder for the Golden State Warriors ahead of their 2022 NBA Finals showdown with the Boston Celtics.

With the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics set to meet in the NBA Finals in 2022, Boston guard Marcus Smart offered an unusual perspective on what may have been in 2018…

On an edition of The Old Man & The Three, J.J. Redick informed J.J. Smart that if the 2018 Celtics had gotten through LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in the postseason, they would have beaten the Warriors in the NBA Finals.

Well, they didn’t … but here is what he told Redick anyway!

“If we went to the championship [in 2018] instead of LeBron and those guys, we definitely would have beat Golden State that year,” said Smart to Redick.

Marcus Smart thinks that in 2018, the Boston Celtics would have beaten the Golden State Warriors

If we want to look back on the postseason in question, keep in mind that Boston was the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed at the time. Despite not winning the Atlantic, the Celtics held home-court advantage against the No. 4-seeded Cavs in the postseason.

Unfortunately, Boston was defeated by James and company in seven games at home. The Warriors swept Cleveland in the 2018 NBA Finals.

While Smart may have a point, the Houston Rockets, another title challenger that year, could conceivably do the same thing. In the Western Conference Finals, Houston would also lose Game 7 at home.

That team, put together by Daryl Morey, was intended solely to defeat the Warriors in the postseason. The Rockets had a chance to win the 2018 NBA Finals, but they did not.

Smart has, accidentally, given the Warriors some bulletin board material as a result of his comments. Kevin Durant was at the peak of his abilities for this 2018 team, which he believes Boston may have defeated.

This is the most recent championship won by Golden State’s big three of Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson. They’re looking for ring number four… for the pinkey!

Golden State should win it in six games, but the NBA Finals might go the distance as well.
