After a “dirty” slide, Tommy Pham threatens to attack Luke Voit in a neighborhood gym

Tommy Pham is standing up for Tyler Stepheson after the Luke Voit incident that left him concussed and offering to throw hands.

The Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres didn’t have a typical Tuesday this week, and things don’t appear to be getting any better anytime soon.

If you missed it, catcher Tyler Stephenson of the Cincinnati Reds was forced to leave Tuesday’s game against the San Diego Padres when Luke Voits collided with him at home plate. Baseball has banned home plate collisions and players from crashing into catchers to score and disrupt what would otherwise be a routine out.

However, that didn’t stop a collision from occurring on Tuesday.

Voit was a few feet behind, but instead of giving up, he tried a slightly more — shall we say, inventive — method of jarring the ball loose. The Reds, on the other hand, have coined the term “dirty play” to describe Voit’s slide.

It’s easy to root for the Reds in this one:

Stephson’s teammates were understandably enraged at the play, and those feelings didn’t go away just because the game was over. Tommy Pham even stated that he would fight Voit to put things right.

It’s unlikely that this will happen, but it’s admirable of Pham to defend his teammate in this way. If history teaches us anything about these kinds of feuds, retaliation will be exacted on the diamond.

The Reds’ series with the Padres ends on Wednesday afternoon, but they’ll face them again on April 28th, so the score might be settled quickly and away from the boxing gym.
