An American airman is suspected of carrying out an insider attack on a US base in Syria that injured four Americans

An Air Force airman is being held in connection with an April 7 attack in Syria on an American base that injured four US personnel.

At first, Combined Joint Task Force–Inherent Resolve officials said that indirect fire like a rocket or mortar barrage caused the explosion that shook Green Village in eastern Syria.

They later discovered that it was caused by charges left at the base’s ammunition storage area and shower facility.

Officials in the United States now believe the attack was carried out from within.

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the Army’s Criminal Investigations Division arrested a U.S.-based airman on June 16 as part of an ongoing investigation.

“The airman’s commander made the decision to place him in pretrial confinement after reviewing the information in the investigation,” Air Force officials said in a statement.

Air Force officials won’t say anything else about the airman, including his name, until charges are brought against him.
