How Queen Elizabeth I’s Youth Unpacks the Complex Relationship of Becoming Elizabeth
In the June 19 episode of Becoming Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth (Alicia von Rittberg) and Thomas Seymour (Tom Cullen) make their emotions for each other known in Becoming Elizabeth.
However, don’t get too enthusiastic about this possible pairing because it’s completely improper. Elizabeth’s guardian, former stepmother Catherine Parr (Jessica Raine), but he is also around 20 years Elizabeth’s senior.
The episode begins with Thomas barging into Elizabeth’s room and pulling off her covers, leaving her in bed with nothing but a flimsy nightgown on. “I’m to rouse my household,” Thomas says flatly, while Elizabeth’s maid protests.
This isn’t the first time the two have had an inappropriate exchange.
In the aforementioned proclamation of love, Thomas seduces Elizabeth, telling the young princess, “Elizabeth, you have the potential to ruin my life.” And if you want, I’ll f—king let you. “
Following a passionate kiss, Thomas goes on to touch teenage Elizabeth’s privates with his hand.
What makes this situation even more repulsive? It’s straight out of a history book.
That’s accurate. Thomas was renowned for lavishing lavish attention on the princess, including barging into her room when she was still in her nightgown and stroking her in a way that raised eyebrows.
So it’s no surprise that Alicia found the on-screen romance “wrong” in an exclusive interview with E! News.
She reflected, “It was incredibly complex and challenging.” “I believe she was in a vulnerable position.” It’s just harmful to have someone who’s 20 years older than her pretend to look after her. “
To play these two people who shouldn’t be together, Alicia and Tom acted as if their relationship was “real,” not based on lust or a desire for power.
But this isn’t the end of the narrative for Elizabeth and Thomas, as Alicia warns that her character will eventually see through the “manipulative nature” of their ostensible affair.
If you’re familiar with Tudor history, you’ll know that many of the characters don’t fare well. As new episodes of Becoming Elizabeth air on Starz every Sunday, watch the drama unfold.
