Trevor Bauer is suing The Athletic and a journalist for slander

Trevor Bauer Suing Journalist & The Athletic For Defamation

People who used to write for The Athletic are being sued by Trevor Bauer of the Los Angeles Dodgers for libel.

Trevor Bauer, the pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, stated on Twitter on Tuesday that he has filed a lawsuit against The Athletic and former writer Molly Knight for “knowingly publishing incorrect material.” A link to the lawsuit was also included in the tweet.

Bauer has now filed his second lawsuit against a newspaper, the first being against Deadspin.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office announced in February that Bauer would not face criminal charges for sexual assault claims made in 2021.

Bauer’s lawsuit says that in a piece published last June, The Athletic and Knight “defamed Mr. Bauer by developing and distributing the false narrative that Mr. Bauer broke the complainant’s skull.” An attorney for the pitcher says the article didn’t take into account the results of a CT scan that said there was no skull fracture.

The defendants “acted with actual malice because they deliberately ignored the truth—which was evident in medical records possessed by The Athletic—and because the defendants’ defamatory statements were part of a campaign to harass Mr. Bauer, as evidenced by, among other things, their prior and subsequent false and misleading statements about his conduct and character, their efforts to dissuade Major League Baseball teams from signing him, and their strident complaints,” the court wrote.

Bauer has been on MLB’s administrative leave list since July of last year, and it was just extended until April 16, when he faces a possible league penalty.

In 2021, he pitched in 17 games, going 8-5 with a 2.59 ERA and 137 strikeouts in 107.2 innings.
