Two LIV golfers have a chance to win the US Open, while one has no chance

Dustin Johnson of the United States looks on from the 11th hole during a practice round prior to the US Open at The Country Club.

BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS – JUNE 14: Dustin Johnson of the United States looks on from the 11th hole during a practice round prior to the US Open at The Country Club.

This week, LIV Golf will be in attendance at the US Open. Who among the LIV golfers has the best chance of winning the tournament, and who doesn’t have a chance?

The 2022 US Open starts on Thursday, but it appears that LIV Golf and those who have joined the PGA’s challengers have taken center stage this week at The Country Club in Brookline.

While some golf fans may find LIV Golf to be divisive, there’s no disputing that the sport’s newest tour features some of the world’s best players.

Because the USGA governs the US Open, Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen, and Patrick Reed will all be at Brookline this week, despite having quit the PGA Tour or being suspended.

While PGA Tour players like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, and others are the odds-on favorites to win the tournament, LIV Golf members should not be overlooked.

Which of the LIV golfers has the highest chance of winning the US Open this week, and which has no chance at all?

Dustin Johnson of LIV Golf has a chance to win the US Open in 2022

This week at Brookline, Dustin Johnson is impossible to rule out. Johnson became the world’s No. 1 golfer in February 2017 and kept the position for nearly a year.

The 37-year-old won the US Open in 2016, indicating that he has the capacity to compete in this type of event.

Johnson was eighth on the PGA Tour in terms of driving distance last year, averaging 312 yards off the tee. While precision is crucial at the US Open, The Country Club is over 7,000 yards long.

Johnson is now surrounded by some negatives as he prepares to play this week. Johnson did not even make the cut in his previous major championship appearance, the PGA Championship.

The South Carolina native was unable to compete that weekend due to back-to-back 73s. Johnson hasn’t finished in the top 10 since March’s THE PLAYERS Championship.

However, now that Dustin Johnson has decided to join LIV Golf, he can focus on being one of the best golfers in the world. Dustin Johnson not only won the 2016 US Open, but he also finished in the top 10 five times. Johnson’s game is designed for this event, and he should do well at Brookline this week.

United States looks on during a practice round prior to the 2022 U.S. Open.

BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS – JUNE 13: Bryson DeChambeau of the United States looks on during a practice round prior to the 2022 U.S. Open.

Bryson DeChambeau of LIV Golf has a chance to win the US Open in 2022

Bryson DeChambeau, who recently joined LIV Golf, is one of the few golfers who has a chance to compete with the big guys on the PGA Tour.

The 28-year-old is a power batter whose analytic approach to the game has sparked debate. However, the outcomes speak for themselves.

After winning the tournament at Winged Foot in 2020, DeChambeau already has a US Open Championship under his belt.

DeChambeau started the final round two strokes behind the leader, but a strong performance on Sunday saw him win the US Open by six strokes over Matthew Wolff.

The big concern about DeChambeau is whether or not he’s in good health.

In April, DeChambeau underwent surgery on his left wrist.

Earlier this year, DeChambeau missed the cut at both the Masters and the Memorial Tournament.

Bryson DeChambeau faces significant challenges, but his recent success at the US Open suggests he has what it takes to compete this week in Brookline.

After joining the LIV golf tour last week, DeChambeau has yet to compete in a tournament.

BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS – JUNE 14: Phil Mickelson of the United States reacts on the fifth green during a practice round prior to the US Open.

Phil Mickelson of LIV Golf will not win the US Open

Sorry for the inconvenience. It will never happen if it hasn’t already. The past is the most accurate predictor of the future, and Phil Mickelson has never been able to do it at the US Open. Mickelson has finished second six times at the US Open in his career.

Mickelson, LIV Golf’s biggest signing, hasn’t played enough this season to convince me that he’ll advance to the highest level at 51 years old. Of course, Mickelson won the PGA Championship surprise last year, so who knows?

Mickelson’s last three appearances at the US Open have all ended in disappointment. Last year, Lefty tied for 62nd, missed the cut in 2020, and tied for 52nd this year. Mickelson hasn’t even finished in the Top 25 since 2013.

Phil Mickelson winning the US Open would be a tremendous story, especially after he chose LIV Golf over the PGA Tour. I just don’t think it’ll happen. Mickelson will be surprised if he even makes it to the weekend, given his recent performance at the US Open.
