Albert Pujols passed Ken Griffey Jr. to hold the record for 20+ home runs against the most franchises with a home run against the Dodgers.
The sixth home run of the year for Albert Pujols has special significance.
It wasn’t only that the Cardinals were up 1-0 in the second inning of a game they would go on to win 7-6 over their previous team, the Dodgers.
He also set a new MLB record with it by hitting his 20th career home run against the Dodgers.
With his home run against the Dodgers, Albert Pujols surpassed Ken Griffey Jr. in the record books.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, Pujols has now hit 20 or more home runs against 17 different MLB teams. He now surpasses Ken Griffey Jr. for the record thanks to this.
With 62, Pujols has hit the most career home runs against the Astros. The Cubs and Pirates follow with 57 and 52, respectively. That comes as no surprise given that all three are the Cardinals’ NL Central rivals.
The St. Louis legend will have to return for another season if he hopes to include additional teams in his 20-home run club. He has 15 versus the Rays, Phillies, Tigers, Marlins, and Marlins. These clubs won’t face the Cardinals again this season.
Pujols has hit three and five home runs against his former teams, the Cardinals and Angels, respectively, which is as you might expect.
The 42-year-old was just added as a legacy player to the NL All-Star roster. For the seventh time in his career, he’ll take part in the Home Run Derby.
