2. Straight up, Kyrie Irving for Anthony Davis. Dealing Russell Westbrook to a different team
This may not be the trade that Lakers fans had hoped for, but it must be considered. In LeBron James’ hour of need, Anthony Davis has failed to rise to the occasion.
The man was embarrassed into shooting a basketball after going nearly two months without doing so. What will motivate a guy to take his game seriously as he approaches 30, honestly? This is why it’s possible to split ways with Davis.
For the sake of argument, trading Davis for Irving keeps things simple, but nothing is as straightforward as it appears.
Davis would thrive in a lineup with Kevin Durant and Ben Simmons. We all know how good Irving is at filling in for James. In the case of Russell Westbrook, the Lakers may need to trade him somewhere else in a separate deal.
This move has the ability to improve the Lakers, but pulling Davis off the court has ramifications.
1. Trade Russell Westbrook to Brooklyn for a first-round pick
Without a doubt, the most straightforward way to bring Irving to Los Angeles is to send Westbrook to Brooklyn in exchange for whatever future draft compensation makes financial sense. Westbrook and Durant were Thunder teammates in the past.
While the pairing with Simmons would be awkward, Westbrook would be the most willing shooter Simmons has ever desired.
This hypothetical transaction reshuffles the deck, allowing the Lakers to legitimately compete for a title with a big three of Davis, Irving, and James. Although it may come back to haunt them, James needs one more ring in Los Angeles for his legacy.
