Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are bracing for a legal showdown.
More than five years after their breakup, Depp’s $50 million defamation case against his ex-wife is taking center stage in a Virginia courtroom.
“She chose to lie about him for her own selfish profit,” Depp’s lawyers said in opening statements that were released on April 12.
In an essay she published for the Washington Post in 2018, Heard characterized herself as a “public figure symbolizing domestic abuse.”
Despite the fact that Depp’s name was not included in the article, his lawyers previously stated in court records that Heard’s op-ed was all part of an “elaborate fraud.”
She also said in court documents that she made up her story to get “good attention” and make more money for herself.

In court on April 13, Depp’s text chats with his neighbor, Isaac Baruch, were exposed.
