Duke and UNC are only one game away from adding another chapter to their rivalry in the Final Four, but have they ever met in March Madness before?
The Duke Blue Devils extended their March Madness run and Coach K’s tenure with a win over Arkansas on Saturday night, advancing to the coveted Final Four. With that comes the possibility of another clash against UNC, their fiercest adversary.
If the Tar Heels defeat Cinderella Saint Peter’s on Sunday night, it will set up a Final Four matchup for the ages in New Orleans, with the two Tobacco Road foes adding a new chapter to their history.
Given their recent success, North Carolina and Duke are no strangers to March Madness and the Final Four. However, there’s a reason you didn’t hear much about their earlier NCAA Tournament meetings.
Have Duke and UNC ever met in the NCAA tournament?
Duke and UNC meeting in the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2022 would be the first time the Blue Devils and Tar Heels have ever met in March Madness. Despite all of their victories, titles, and success, they have never met at the big dance.
The only time the two rivals came close to facing off in the NCAA Tournament was in 1991, when both teams advanced to the Final Four, but on separate sides of the bracket.
But Duke advanced to the National Championship Game, but UNC was defeated in the first round (ironically, losing to Roy Williams and Kansas).
However, this meeting in 2022 could provide us with another piece of March Madness history. In any case, we’ll be witnessing an all-time Tobacco Road Rivalry or a legend in Coach K facing an all-time Cinderella in Saint Peter’s. Simply said, college basketball fans can not lose in this circumstance.
